By the way, a week after 6 inches of snow, it was 68 degrees today.

Arthur: I love this series. The white bow on the strip of snow was a great choice. The color range is on the fire shots is nicely constrained. I spent Christmas in upstate NY and saw less than 6 inches of snow the whole time. Now I'm back in California, so it will take a trip to the mountains for any snow this year.

I also love the folds created by the smoke in 'fire' and by the fire in 'fireplace'.

What were your aperture/shutter speed/metering settings for the aforesaid photographs?

PhotoDude: Russ, as I recall, I was trying to keep a shutter speed of around 1/30 to 1/60 of a second, so I could hopefully freeze the "log" and fireplace while getting a little motion in the flame. It made for a more silky appearance.
 
As for the snow shot, any camera will normally try to underexpose snow and make it a midtone grey. Usually, you'd want to compensate by adding at least two stops of exposure, but I just added one so I could keep as much highlight detail and texture as possible in the snow (since there was so little else in the scene), and then "moved" the whites where I wanted them in Photoshop.
 
Generally, I like to make the images coming out of the camera be kind of "flat," with no glaring highlights and no black shadows (as much as the situation allows). I can make the highlights and shadows be where ever I want to place them in "post processing." To me, the capture coming out of a digital camera is a negative. It's not a finished photo yet.

Russ: PhotoDude, thanks for your answers to my question and your personal insight. Thanks for the tip about photographing snow. I think little nuggets of information like adding an extra stop when photographing snow are valuable to me as they help me to better understand my subject and my degree of control of it.

I'm intrigued by your view on digital photography. I took a course on basic black & white photography last year and I was taught how to develop my own negatives, which was a task in itself. Up until then I was truly oblivious to the amount of post-processing one can do after one has taken a photograph. I thought it was a simple matter of sticking it in a machine for a minute and out pops your photograph.
